    District Court of Surat came into existence on 1817 as per available record and was located at Old Court Building, Near Collector Office, Multi storied Building Surat.

    Now, The District Court and Subordinate courts at Surat are situated in two court complex i.e. The District Court Building and Fast Track Court Building. Both buildings are large and spacious located at Athwalines, Surat. The District Court compound is a spacious premise with trees scattered throughout. Both the Buildings are situated at the distance at about 9 Kms from Railway Station as well as Bus Station. The District Court Complex is divided in two blocks, i.e. A-Block and B-Block. “A” Block is earmarked for functioning the Courts, while “B” Block is earmarked for Offices. The Courts / Offices are functioning in the Fast Track Court Building.

    The District Court Complex was constructed in the year of 1994. Thereafter, in the year- 2001 it was damaged on account of massive earthquake. Owing to structural damage, the building was deemed uninhabitable. Therefore, the Courts functioning were shifted at other places, viz. Multi storied Building, Old Rest House etc. After the completion of the retrofitted work of the building, the courts of Surat functioning at other places were re-shifted in the present building in the year- 2005. However, the repairing work to the columns of building, which are damaged to some extent was ongoing process for the purpose of procreation and safety. The District Court Complex (Retrofitted) at Surat was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Justice Bhawani Singh, the then Chief Justice, High Court of Gujarat and Hon’ble Shri Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister, State of Gujarat presided over the function on 27th February, 2005. The District Court building was having Ground + six floors.To provide competent legal aid services, District court building includes the Mediation Center, Permanent Conciliation and office of D.L.S.A., Surat. The District Court Computer Center and Central Filling Center is also available at District Court, Surat.

    The Fast Track Court Building was constructed in the year of 2005. It was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Shri Justice Bhavani Singh, the then Chief Justice, High of Gujarat. The Fast Track Building is in good condition. This building is having Ground + Four floors. This building is equipped with Water-cooler, RO plant and Lift services for all. Both building provides ample seating arrangement for witness/litigating public at each floor and facility of EPABX including intercom. Separately allotted bar room, bar library and lady bar room for the members of the Bar Associations.

    The Newly Constructed District Court Building of Surat was inaugurated on the 7th December, 2014 by the auspicious Hands of Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.R.Dave Judge, Supreme Court of India in the presence of Hon’ble Mr. Justice V.M.Sahai Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Gujarat, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ravi R. Tripathi Judge, High Court of Gujarat, Hon’ble Mr. Justice S.R.Brahmbhatt Judge, High Court of Gujarat (Administrative Judge, Surat District) and Hon’ble Mr. Pradeepsinh Jadeja Minister of State, Law & Justice, Gujarat State.

    According to City Survey no.2811 of Athwa ward, 3541 square meter Land allotted to the District Court Surat by the Collector, District Surat. Administrative permission was given by Legal Department, Government of Gujarat for the expense of Rs. 43,14,96,000 [ forty three crore fourteen lacs ninety six thousands only ] for the construction of new court building dated 29th October, 2009 and revised administrative permission given by Legal Department, Government of Gujarat for the expense of Rs. 47,95,73,000 [ forty seven crore ninety five lacs seventy three thousands only ] for the construction of new court building dated 27th February, 2012.

    Newly constructed building contains Ground + 10 Floors. This building is having 44 courts seating arrangement. Each floor is equipped with water cooler and RO plant facility to provide uninterrupted supply of purified drinking water for all individuals. Adequate lift services for all and exclusive seating arrangement for witness/litigating public is available in the complexes. Separately allotted bar room, bar library and lady bar room for the members of the Bar Associations. Availability of custody room for Under Trial Prisoner at each floor. To make sure ‘Access to justice for all’ while promoting inclusive legal system for all at District Court, the District court building houses Mediation Center, Permanent Conciliation, office of D.L.S.A. and Lok adalat. The District Court Computer Center located at 3rd Floor and Central Filling Center at Ground Floor. Availability of District court computer center, central filing center, video conference court, conference room and EPABX facility with intercom provides digital sustainable environment for litigants and judicial staff.
