History

District Court of Surat came into existence on 1817 as per available record and was located at Old Court Building, Near Collector Office, Multistoried Building Surat.

After that, District Court and Subordinate courts at Surat are situated in two court complex i.e. Tha District Court Building and Fast Track Court Building, which are located at Athwalines, Surat. Both buildings are large and spacious. The compound is also spacious and there are trees in it. Both the Buildings are situated at the distance at about 9 Kms. from Railway Station as well as Bus Station. The District Court Complex is divided in two blocks, i.e. A-Block and B-Block. “A” Block is earmarked for functioning the Courts, while “B” Block is earmarked for Offices. The Courts / Offices are functioning in the Fast Track Court Building.

The District Court Complex is constructed in the year of 1994. Thereafter, in the year- 2001 it was damaged on account of massive earthquake. On account of damaged to the Building it was not habitable. Therefore, the Courts functioning in the Building were shifted at other places, viz. Multistoried Building, Old Rest House etc. thereafter, on completion of the Retrofitted work of the building the courts of Surat functioning at other places were re-shifted in the present building in the year- 2005, the building appears to be in good condition. However, the repairing work to the columns of building, which are damaged to some extent , is going on for the purpose of procreation and safety. The District Court Complex (Retrofitted) at Surat was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Justice Bhawani Singh, the then Chief Justice, High Court of Gujarat and Hon’ble Shri Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister, State of Gujarat presided over the function on 27th February, 2005. This building is having Ground + six floors. Facility of Water-coolers also available at each floor. Facility of RO plant is also available. Facility of sufficient lift is available in the building including a separate lift for Judicial officer. Facility of custody room for U.T.P. is also available at each floor. A separate facility in the building is also available for the Mediation Center, Permanent Conciliation and for functioning the office of D.L.S.A., Surat. The District Court Computer Center and Central Filling Center is also available at District Court, Surat.

The Fast Track Court Building has been constructed in the year of 2005. It was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Shri Justice Bhavani Singh, the then Chief Justice, High of Gujarat. The Fast Track Building is in good condition and also found to be sufficient. This building is having Ground + Four floors. Facility of Water-cooler is also available at each floor. Facility of sufficient lift is available. Sitting arrangement for witness/litigating public is available in both the complexes. Facility of EPABX is available in the both building including intercom. Separately allotted bar room, bar library and lady bar root to the members of the Bar Associations.

Now, The Newly Constructed District Court Building of Surat is going to inaugurate on the 7th December, 2014 by the Auspicious Hands of Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.R.Dave Judge, Supreme Court of India in the presence of Hon’ble Mr. Justice V.M.Sahai Acting Chief Justice, High Court of Gujarat, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Ravi R. Tripathi Judge, High Court of Gujarat, Hon’ble Mr. Justice S.R.Brahmbhatt Judge, High Court of Gujarat (Administrative Judge, Surat District) and Hon’ble Mr. Pradeepsinh Jadeja Minister of State, Law & Justice, Gujarat State.

According to City Survey no.2811 of Athwa ward, 3541 square meter Land allotted to the District Court Surat by the Collector, District Surat. Administrative permission given by Legal Department, Government of Gujarat for the expense of Rs. 43,14,96,000 [ forty three crore fourteen lacs ninety six thousands only ] for the construction of new court building dated 29th October, 2009 and revised administrative permission given by Legal Department, Government of Gujarat for the expense of Rs. 47,95,73,000 [ forty seven crore ninety five lacs seventy three thousands only ] for the construction of new court building dated 27th February, 2012.

Newly constructed building contains Ground + 10 Floors. This building is having 44 courts sitting arrangement. Facility of Water-cooler is also available at each floor. Facility of sufficient lift is available. Sitting arrangement for witness/litigating public is available in the complexes. Facility of EPABX is available in the building including intercom. Separately allotted bar room, bar library and lady bar root to the members of the Bar Associations. Facility of custody room for U.T.P. is also available at each floor. A separate facility in the building is also available for the Mediation Center, Permanent Conciliation and for functioning the office of D.L.S.A., Surat. The District Court Computer Center located at 3rd Floor and Central Filling Center is also available at Ground Floor, Newly constructed Court Building District Court, Surat. Video Conference Court, Conference room, Common Seminar Hall, Bar Room, Lok Adalat, etc. facilities are available in newly constructed building district Surat.
